Da Vinci 7th-graders win national science award

Da Vinci Academy seventh grade students Evan Novak and Charlotte O'Sullivan each received the 2011 Broadcom MASTERS award (Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars), presented nationally to the top 10 percent of sixth- to eighth-grade participants at their SSP-Affiliate science fairs.

The students received the awards at the regional Illinois Science Fair held on Saturday, March 12 at Northern Illinois University.

Novak studied the effects of additives on siphon flow rate, and O'Sullivan studied the effects of presbycusis (age-related hearing loss). Both students also were named state semi-finalists to advance to the State Science Fair.

As Broadcom award winners, Novak and O'Sullivan can compete in the online MASTERS competition, with a chance to be selected as a national finalist.

Da Vinci Academy is located at Hopps and Randall roads in Elgin and enrolls 130 students in grades PK-8. For information, visit www.dvacademy.org or call (847) 841-7532.
