Crystal Lake Central FVC champ; Dundee-Crown 2nd
The goal is to finish in the top three and to stay healthy.
Crystal Lake Central's wrestling team accomplished both on Saturday by clinching the 2010 Fox Valley Conference championship. The league tournament was held at Grayslake Central.
CLC finished with 7 champions and with 237.50 points to clinch its third consecutive conference championship.
"I thought we did real well and lost only one placement match today," Crystal Lake Central coach Justin Laier said. "All of our guys did well in the final round and I think we will do well in the regionals. We all came out healthy and will get ready for the regionals."
Dundee-Crown had three champions and finished second with 171.50 points.
"We wrestled well," Dundee-Crown coach Al Zinke said. "We needed to wrestle perfect to overcome Crystal Lake Central and hope that they had a few hiccups, but we didn't wrestle perfect."
Crystal Lake South finished in third place with one champion and 159.50 points.
The rest of the teams were McHenry (137 points), Cary-Grove (121.50), and Prairie Ridge (111.50) rounding out the top six while Grayslake North finished with 111 and Grayslake Central with 95.
CLC's Trevor Jauch (125 pounds) won his second consecutive FVC championship with a 15-5 technical fall over Cary-Grove's Corey Meyer.
"This was pretty much a warmup for the regionals," said Jauch. "I just wanted to stay healthy.".
. The Tigers' Jason Fugiel used a reversal to win his match 3-0 over McHenry's Conor Infelis to capture the 130-pound title.
"He gave me a tough match," said Fugiel. "He kept trying to bring me down from the top, and I kept blocking him and finally I was able to score on the takedown."
CLC's Austin Marsten (189) won by major decision over Woodstock's North Kevin Hein.
The Tigers kept their dominance it the middle weight classes as Christian Maloof pinned Rich Downes of Grayslake North at 1:38, Taylor Servant (145) defeated Cary-Grove's Josh Nelson 7-2, Joey Kielbasa (152) executed his third consecutive pin of the tournament, this time against Woodstock's Shawn Hovilid, and later on Gage Harrah (215) finished the CLC onslaught by pinning Cary-Grove's Rich Kersten at 2:28.
"Rick is really one of my good friends so he knew what to expect," Harrah said. "I watch a lot of wrestling so I have been working on using the top of my head when I am on top to keep driving my opponent."
Crystal Lake South's Nick Fontanetta started things off by pinning Prairie Ridge's Brad Cullen in only 13 seconds at 103 pounds.
"I like getting off the mat as quick as I can," said Fontanetta. "The key is to place and to stay healthy."
Dundee-Crown's Miko Villanueva won the 112-pound crown with an 18-7 major decision over Prairie Ridge's Zach Synon.
Other champions were Frank Abitua (Dundee Crown, 140), Justin Peete (Johnsburg, 160) and Cody Churkey (Dundee-Crown, 171).

Didrickson was ahead 14-9, but Lutz was able to do a reversal and almost pinned Diedrickson but Diedrickson was able to come back and did a reversal of his own to put Lutz on his back.
"I really thought I had him pinned," Lutz said. "The ref felt that I just didn't hold him long enough."
