Cairo slam snares victory for St. Viator

Lou Cairo didn't produce the ultimate grand finale for St. Viator in its nonconference baseball game with visiting Schaumburg on Tuesday.

But Cairo did save the Lions from a loss as his two-out grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning tied the game at 15-15. They re-loaded the bases but couldn't score and the game was halted because of darkness.

Cairo also doubled and drove in 7 runs as the Lions (5-3) took a 6-0 lead in the first and an 11-8 lead with a 5-run third. Kevin Gannon went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Tyler Ford went 3-for-3, Dominic Monaco went 2-for-3 and Anthony Quagliano allowed only 1 hit and 1 unearned run in 22/3 innings in his first pitching appearance since he suffered a torn ACL in October.

Joe Dombek (3-for-5) and Kevin Hilliard (2-for-5) homered, doubled and had 2 RBI for Schaumburg (4-3). Mike Petritis and Connor McHugh also homered as the Saxons took a 15-11 lead with 3 runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Prospect 14, Notre Dame 6: Prospect (7-3) heads into Mid-Suburban League play on a six-game winning streak after it pounded out 14 hits in a nonconference win at Notre Dame.

John Coen went 3-for-4, Miles Osei was 2-for-4 and Joey Siers went 2-for-3 with a double as the Knights broke open the game with a 7-run third. Will Botefuhr got the victory.

Leyden 5, Addison Trail 0: Jeremy Stawychny (3-0) threw a 2-hitter with 14 strikeouts and 2 walks as Leyden (7-5, 3-3) rebounded from Saturday's West Suburban Gold double-header loss to the Blazers.

"His changeup and curve kept them off-balance all day," said Leyden coach Gary Wolf. "Jeremy kept them guessing all day. It was a great win for our team and it showed a lot of character."

Stawychny also had 2 hits and an RBI and Adam Locassio drove in 3 runs.

Conant 11, Benet 4: Otto Linderman doubled and drove in 3 runs, Kyle Gizynski drove in 2 runs and Mike Passaro had an RBI for Conant (6-1). Bill Colantonio was the winning pitcher.
