Boyd, Grens roll

Boy oh Boyd.

Elk Grove’s girls basketball team got off to a superb start on its home floor Thursday night.

Junior standout Diamond Boyd scored a game-high 21 points with 8 rebounds and 6 steals as the Grenadiers topped North Lawndale (Chicago) 56-36 in their first game of the Elk Grove-Hoffman Estates-Lake Park Invite.

“Diamond was just a presence all over the floor,” said Grens coach Ryan Kirkorsky. “She did a nice job.”

Kirkorsky also praised the work of 5-foot-6 junior point guard Kelly Naughton, who collected 8 points with 4 steals and 4 assists.

“She really controlled the tempo of the game,” Kirkorsky said. “We saw that they pressured Hoffman Estates a lot (on Tuesday night in a 50-37 loss at Hoffman).

“So we wanted to attack their press and make decisions when to attack in the frontcourt. We tried to be more patient when opportunities were not there.”

Senior Liz Bowman and junior Kari Czeszewski each added 8 points for Elk Grove while sophomore Melissa Solorio chipped in 6.

Lake Park 53, Hoffman Estates 32: Junior Destinee Young (11 points), senior Sara Burns (senior) and junior Becca Stoczynski (7) were top scorers for Hoffman, which is now 1-1 in the Lake Park-Elk Grove-Hoffman Estates Invite.

Buffalo Grove 48, Westinghouse 39: Junior Bailey North led the Bison (1-0) its opening game of the Buffalo Grove Invite with 13 points while Emily Cho chipped in 9 and Kim Herzog (8).

Addison Trail 44, Leyden 29: Leyden was led by senior forward Jeanine Hannoun (10 points) and junior Crystal Nguyen (5 points) in the Fenton-Addison Trail tourney game.

Willows 39, CLA 24: Jess Moriarty (7 points) and Jayna Rowland (6 points) led Christian Liberty. Moriarty and Jenn West each hit 3-pointer for the Chargers (1-1).

Maine South 65, Barrington 32: Jacqui Graham (16 points), Michelle Maher (14 points) and Nina Duric (11 points) led Maine South (2-0) over the Fillies (1-1) in the Buffalo Grove Invite.
