Prospect maintains momentum
Coming off a solid fourth-place finish in the Dundee-Crown tournament, Prospect's girls basketball team kept its momentum with a 35-28 victory at Barrington on Tuesday night.
The Mid-Suburban League crossover victory lifted the Knights to 13-4 overall heading into Saturday's game at MSL East battle at Wheeling.
Junior guard Sarah Winans led Prospect with 10 points while Rachel Hunt added 9.
Sarah Hunt and Lexi Glennon each added 8 for the winners.
"Lexi did a nice job defending Abby Kirchoff," said Prospect coach Martha Kelly. "She is an all-conference player and Lexi held her to 2 points."
The Fillies were 9-of-45 from the floor.
"I was disappointed with our shooting but part of it was that our shot selection wasn't that good," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "Shelby Whigham led us offensively and I thought she played very well defensively, too."
Whigham finished with 12 points while Sarah Mass added 8. Emily Haris had 8 rebounds and 2 assists for the Fillies (9-7).
"We played good defense," Barreiro added. "But we did not shoot the ball well."
The Fillies host Conant at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Wheeling 52, Conant 34: Seniors Janelle Cannon (18 points) and Bianca Szafarowicz (13) led the Wildcats (17-2) to their ninth straight victory, including undefeated runs in two Christmas tournaments.
Junior Lindsay Fillingim had 8 points for Conant (5-11).
Elk Grove 61, Schaumburg 40: Ashley Capotosto (9 rebounds), the all-time leading scorer in Elk Grove girls basketball history, tossed home a game-high 22 points and Courtney Lindfors (8 rebounds) added 21 for the Grenadiers (13-3).
Sophomore Dani Goranson chipped in 16 points with a pair of 3-pointers and 6 rebounds.
Alyssa Saklak led Schaumburg (4-12) with 13 points while Taylor Kosla added 12 with a pair of 3-pointers.
Fremd 44, Buffalo Grove 43: With the game tied, junior Megan Gray (game-high 15 points) hit a 3-pointer to give Fremd (12-5) a 44-41 lead with 16 seconds left.
Andre DiPrima's bucket closed the deficit to 44-43 and after Fremd missed a free throw, BG had a shot go in and out at the buzzer.
Taylor Glassmann added 12 point for the Mid-Suburban West leaders while Jessie Wiedemann put in 7. Teammate Gianna Abruzzo pulled down 8 rebounds and handed out 6 assists.
The Bison (6-10), who played zone defense the whole game, were led by Emily Georgoulis (11 points), DiPrima (9) and Heather Nisbet (8).
Palatine 33, Rolling Meadows 31: Junior Katie Scovic scored 10 points and freshman Nia Pappas added 7 to lead Palatine (8-9). Scovic also had a pair of 3-pointers while Pappas had one. Lauren Radtke and Katie Nawrot added 6 apiece for the Pirates.
Sophomore guard Ann Marie Lynch led the Mustangs (6-8) with 8 points while junior Madelyn Conlin added 7.
