Wheaton Municipal Band welcomes Colonel Michael J. Colburn at July 27 concert
The Memorial Park bandshell in downtown Wheaton has welcomed some of the world's finest band conductors over its 94 years, and this week is no exception.
This week, the Wheaton Municipal Band welcomes Colonel Michael J. Coburn, the 27th Director of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band on Thursday, July 27.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Park, 225 Karlskoga Ave. Bring a lawn chair, a picnic, or sit in the stadium seats.
During his more than 20 years with of service with the band, Colburn served as principal euphonium, assistant director, and from July 2004-14, the firector who led the Marine Band in its third century.
Founded in 1798, The Marine Band's mission is to perform for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. It is the oldest continuously active professional musical organization with a stellar reputation of presenting the finest in concert band music.
Colburn programs a concert that exudes Americana. No waiting for a Sousa marches this week. Colburn starts right out with the fan's favorite and ends the concert with another great Sousa march.
In between, the band performs "Family Album Suite" by Morton Gould. This stunning work takes a musical peak into the nostalgia of a family photo album. The work is filled with rhythmic challenges, solo reflections, and humor. What better place to listen to this reflective music, than in Memorial Park.
Contrast this with Leroy Anderson's "Sandpiper Ballet." In addition, there is music by John Williams and contemporary composer Julie Girioux. This is a program not to be missed.
Many people call the Wheaton Municipal Band a "Hidden Gem" because of its outstanding musicians, first class artistry, the stunning setting of Memorial Park, and of course the leadership of Dr. Bruce Moss. On Friday, July 28 on CBS Channel 2 News, the band will be featured as a "Hidden Gem."
