St. Edward remained in the thick of the Suburban Christian Blue race Wednesday, taking a 5-1 decision from St. Francis at the Elgin Sports Complex.
The Green Wave (13-10, 6-5) limited their errors to two and winning pitcher Sarah Field scattered 8 hits while waiting for her team to score all five of its runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
"We made some defensive changes and they're starting to pan out," said St. Edward coach Mike Rolando, whose team won for the second day in a row. "And the bats finally came to life."
BreAunna Medinger and Tarah McShane each had doubles for the Wave, Medinger driving in one run and McShane two. Field and Kali Kossakowski also had RBI for St. Edward, which plays a nonconference game at Hampshire today.
"It was a huge win," Rolando said. "The girls came to play and Sarah Field pitched a gem."
Huntley 14, McHenry 2: Kelsey Hagan was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Jenna Mychko went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI as Huntley (13-6, 5-2) crept to within a game of Cary-Grove in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division. Tara Lycos also had 2 hits and an RBI for the Red Raiders and Geena Rirando had an RBI. Taylor Larson (11-5) picked up the win, allowing just 2 hits. She struck out four and walked two.
St. Charles North 10, Streamwood 0: Streamwood got 8 hits but couldn't plate any runs in this loss to Upstate Eight leader St. Charles North (18-2, 8-1). Jenna Szabo suffered the loss for the Sabres (5-14, 1-8).
St. Charles East 15, Larkin 4: Larkin made 10 errors, giving it 17 this week, in falling to the Saints in the Upstate Eight. Losing pitcher Kiernan Schock allowed just 6 hits. Alex Buhrow was 2-for-2 with a home run for the Royals (6-16, 3-7) and Megan Johnson went 2-for-3 with a home run. Ashley Frey and Danielle Bauer also drove in runs for Larkin.
Richmond 14, Hampshire 3: Christina Potempa and Mary Bruscato had doubles for the Whip-Purs (4-13, 0-5) in this Big Northern East loss. Jennifer Hurst (2-6) took the loss in the circle for Hampshire.
Rockford Lutheran 16, Westminster Christian 6: Hannah Graves was 3-for-4 with a double and Liz Farwell and Katie Surratt each had 2 hits for Westminster in this Northeast Athletic Conference loss. Graves suffered the pitching defeat for the Warriors (1-11, 1-7).
