Cook County Health reminds you to make time for healthy teeth
While there are a lot of things to remember before sending a child back to school, make sure a visit to the dentist is on that list.
In Illinois, children entering kindergarten, second and sixth grades are all required to have a dental exam before returning to school. But regardless of whether the exam is required, if you or your child have not been to a dentist recently, it's time to make an appointment.
Cook County Health is here for your dental needs.
Routine dental visits are important for good oral health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported that tooth decay is one of the most chronic infectious diseases to impact children. Diagnosing and treating dental pain or disease is important as issues can lead to difficulty in eating, speaking, playing and learning, and ultimately missed days of school.
To help prevent tooth decay:
• Brush twice a day with a toothpaste that contains fluoride
• Eat nutritious and balanced meals
• Limit the consumption of sugary drinks and snacks
• Floss after meals
Dental exams don't have to cause anxiety. Talk to your dental team about any concerns you might be having. It's important for children to see good dental habits from the adults in their lives.
