Twenty-first Star Chapter NSDAR Recognizes DAR Good Citizens
At its 2022 American History Luncheon on February tenth, the Twenty-first Star Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was pleased to honor students of Maine East, Maine South and Maine West high schools as their Outstanding American History Scholars and DAR Good Citizens.
Honorariums were also presented to the Social Science and Social Studies Departments of the participating schools.
The Twenty-first Star Chapter of the NSDAR is pleased to honor students from each of the Maine Township High Schools as DAR Good Citizens. To receive the DAR Good Citizen Award each student must demonstrate leadership, service, dependability, and patriotism.
Each winner was reviewed by Twenty-first Star Chapter DAR Good Citizen Director Mary Ann Bledsoe. The students are presented with a pin, a special certificate of achievement, and a recognition card. They will each receive a monetary award at the close of the school year.
The Maine South High School winner is Christo Maheras. Christo is the president of the Model United Nations Club and a member of the Constitution Team. He is a commentary writer for the school newspaper, Southwords. He is the varsity soccer captain and received the CSL Sportsmanship Award for Volleyball. Christo volunteers for TopSoccer, where he mentors children with special needs to improve their athletic skills. He is a Park Ridge Soccer referee for participants ages 9-17. For the past two years, he has been a counselor for the Maine South Volleyball summer camp, working with children ages 10-15.
The Maine West High School winner is Dulf Genis. This outstanding student is the president of the Science National Honors Society, a member of the Mathematics Honors Society and the History National Honors Society. He also participates in the Model United Nations and is a Mock Trial member. Dulf gives private violin lesson and is an officer of Tri-M, the Music National Honors Society. He is an intern at SPEAK in Des Plains, an organization dedicated to keeping diverse community members informed of current events. He also volunteers at the Center of Concern, Give Back Key Club, the Des Plaines Public Library, and at the National Honors Societies Assisted Living Facilities.
Maine East's Dalal Hassane has the distinction of being selected as the Maine East award recipient for both the Outstanding American History Scholars and DAR Good Citizens award this year. Her academic achievements include National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Schuler Scholar, and Kurdish Professional Census Essay Contest winner. She is also a member of the Gifted Lyceum Program. Dalal loves to write poetry and prose about the need for Kurdish rights. Her love of written expression is utilized by being the Editor-in-Chief of The Pioneer school newspaper. She is president of the Feminist Club and a member of Students Against Racism. Dalal volunteers as a Syrian Community Network tutor. She will be attending Harvard University to study comparative literature along with ethnicity and migration rights.
The Twenty-first Star Chapter NSDAR serves the Park Ridge, Niles, Des Plaines, and Morton Grove areas. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal decent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. The NSDAR recognizes, "Patriots: as not only soldiers, but anyone who contributed to the cause of American freedom."
