End-of-summer Health Tips from Cook County Health

With Labor Day marking the end of summer, the change in seasons is a good time to do a health assessment.

Here are five tips from Cook County Health to make sure you start fall on the right foot.

1. Find a workout inspiration. While summer clothing provides a good reason to get into shape, the return of sweaters doesn't mean it's time to stop working out. Sign up for a local race or find a workout class to join. The cooler temperatures make it a great time to take your workout outside.

2. Make sleep a priority. After all the busyness of summer, this is a good time to make sure you are getting enough sleep. One tip: avoid using electronic devices at least an hour before bed.

3. Check in with your physician. While many students are required to have back-to-school physicals and dental exams, adults should be scheduling appointments as well. You can also make plans to get a flu shot.

4. Try a healthy gameday recipe. Football season doesn't have to mean heavy dips, chips and fried foods. Find ways to substitute healthier options for your favorite dishes.

5. Get outside. It will be winter before we know it, but now is a great time to enjoy the mild temperatures and sunshine. Studies have shown being outside can reduce stress and help improve moods. Just don't forget the sunscreen!
