The signs of summer are everywhere. I found this chalk art along a sidewalk in Aurora last week as the weather settled into a vacation like pattern. This photo was published in the Perspective column in the print edition.

I pulled this picture out of my archives the other day when I heard that former Cubs manager Don Zimmer had passed away at the age of 83. I know he was a player, coach and manager for a lot of teams, but I'll always think of him as a Cub and as my favorite all-time manager. I used to love it when he'd take a right-handed reliever, for instance, off the mound and put him in right field to bring on a lefty for one batter, then put the righty back on the hill. Plus I met him at Pickles Deli in Clearwater a year or two after he'd been fired while my brother and I were having lunch and he was eating with Mel Stottlemeyer. He Couldn't have been nicer and more gracious to indulge me in some baseball talk. He was the best. PERSPECTIVE is a weekly photo column by the Daily Herald's Fox Valley photo staff. The "Vivian Maier: Exposed" exhibit is opening June 17 in the Cleve Carney Art Gallery at the College of DuPage's MacAninch Arts Center. On a nature walk through downtown Grayslake, two-year-old children collect bugs, sticks and rocks as they make their way back to the 4Kids Childcare Learning Center Wednesday. The preschool children walked along rain soaked sidewalks as they scrambled to find objects for their class sensory table.

Kane County Forest Preserve naturalist Josh Libman, far left, leads a group of first and second graders on a hike into the woods to learn how to build a natural fort at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles on Thursday. 20 youngsters attended the "Week in the Woods" camp at the preserve, studying different aspects of nature each day of the week. Daily themes included mammals, birds, insects and "Humans in Nature." Kids learned the importance of humans respecting the environment, what they can recycle and compost, making a craft from natural elements and even building a nature fort for protection.

Hoffman and Cwian, both of St. Charles, are longtime friends and have been riding together for years. Cwian's family owns Red Roses Farm just a few miles away. They compete in riding events, which some have an endurance component, so after their intense riding earlier in the morning, they decided to take the horses for a walk through the preserve. They visit the preserve about once a week.
