Glenbard plans variety of activities for Red Ribbon Week
From Oct. 22-31, Glenbard District 87 will recognize Red Ribbon Week, a time to take a stand against the negative influences of drugs. Red Ribbon Week acknowledges the sacrifice of Enrique (Kiki) Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Administration agent who died in the line of service. The week honors his legacy and commitment to safe, healthy drug-free kids.
The following are a few of the awareness events that have been organized by the Students for Students clubs at all of the Glenbard schools.
Glenbard East: Many presentations on drug and alcohol prevention and prescription drug abuse have been organized for before, during and after school. Red ribbons will be tied on trees and a grim reaper presentation has been organized to represent the number of lives lost to drug abuse.
Glenbard North: Students for Students designed a My Future is Bright No Drugs in Sight T- shirt and another T-shirt that states, Pulling Others Down Will Never Help You Reach the Top. A red ribbon, wristband and button distribution has been organized, along with bulletin board displays.
Glenbard South: Glenbard South chose as its theme Respect Yourself: Be Drug-Free. Post- its with positive comments will be placed on each student's locker, encouraging self-respect. A red out day is planned; red ribbons will be posted on lockers; and signs will be displayed in common areas.
Glenbard West: Students created a tagline campaign of Tie the Knot to a Healthy Lifestyle, Break Free from Drugs. Red ribbons will be placed on lockers, and throughout the campus, and a paper chain of life filled with items that promote healthy lifestyle alternatives to drugs will be displayed.
A Sticker Shock Campaign in conjunction with the DuPage County Health Department's Prevention Leadership Team, Parents and Teens Together (PATT), Reality Illinois and Jewel also has been organized to remind customers that providing alcohol to minors is illegal, unhealthy and unacceptable.
Additionally, the Glenbard Parent Series: (GPS) Navigating Healthy Families will present A Paradigm Shift: Helping Kids Create an Environment Where Bullying is Obsolete at noon Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Community Consolidated School District 93 Administration Center.
