Veterans Day events

Veterans Day ceremonies scheduled in the Fox Valley include:

Algonquin: On Sunday, 46 boxes, full of approximately 3,700 homemade bar cookies, will be blessed by Pastor Kendall Koenig at Light of Christ Lutheran Church, 100 Hanson Road, Algonquin.

The boxes will be sent to military personnel throughout the world and 18 boxes will be delivered to individuals now stationed in Iraq.

The homemade cookies will include personalized notes and pictures from the children of the church.

The members of Light of Christ would like to thank the Lake in the Hills American Legion Post 1231 for assisting with the mailing charges. Rich Jung noted that money was donated from the Legion post, Legion Women's Auxiliary and also the Sons of the American Legions.

A special service to recognize and celebrate veterans and those now serving our country has been scheduled. All past and current servicemen are invited to wear their uniforms. Members of the local Boy Scout troop will present the flag at the services, which will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday and at 7:45, 9 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Carpentersville: The Carpentersville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5915, honor guard and ladies auxiliary will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Sunday at the post home, 301 Lake Marian Road, Carpentersville. All residents are invited to attend. For details, call the post at (847) 428-4836.

Cary: A memorial service honoring veterans will be presented at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Veterans Park in Cary, 1 Park Ave.

Huntley: District 158 is honoring local veterans with a Veterans Day recognition program at 9:15 a.m. Monday in the Huntley High School Performing Arts Center, 13719 Harmony Road. Enter through door No. 24.

Guests are invited to arrive at 8:30 a.m. for a continental breakfast and to register their name and branch of the military they served in. They may be seated on stage or in the stands.

The program will last about an hour. All veterans in the community and their spouses are invited.

The junior class of Huntley High School will be listening as guest speakers share their personal stories. This presentation will provide students an opportunity to develop a greater appreciation for the service veterans have given and continue to give.

McHenry County College: McHenry County College is collecting donations for U.S. men and women serving in Iraq to help make the holidays a little merrier for them. Collection boxes will be available on campus through Monday when the college holds its annual Veterans Day program in the multipurpose room.

Boxes are located outside Room B174, in the Commons Area in Building B, room A256; outside the Financial Aid Office in Building A; and in rooms C212 and E212.

Suggestions for gifts include phone cards, AA and AAA batteries, warm socks, skin lotion, comedy DVDs, music CDs, electronic hand-held games, crossword puzzles, word search games, cookies, trail mix, nuts, candy and holiday note cards, including Christmas, Hanukah and Kwanzaa.

The Veterans Day Recognition ceremony on Monday will feature keynote speaker Major Frank Bart of Wauconda, music by the McHenry High School Band and Choral Ensemble. A Combined Services Color Guard presentation will be featured, along with bagpipes music.

The ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the Multipurpose Room at the college and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided following the program.

West Dundee: Tri-City Evergreen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2298 will hold its annual Veterans Day observance starting at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the post home, 117 W. First St., West Dundee. It will be followed by a service honoring veterans at 10:30 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 401 W. Main St., West Dundee.

At 12:30 p.m. Monday, veteran Jack Van Aker will speak about his experiences in World War II at the Dundee Township Senior Center in Carpentersville. It will be followed by a flag-folding ceremony, where Post Commander Patrick Green will do the 13 folds and explain what each fold means.
