Looking for some fun fall activities to chase away the back-to-school blues? Stop by the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department or visit the Web site at www.lith.org to check out all the exciting programs available in our Fall Brochure. We are now accepting resident registration. Non-resident registration begins Aug/ 23.

For youth

Beginning skateboard lessons: Calling all sk8ter boys and girls. The Parks & Recreation Department of Lake in the Hills has teamed up with Boardom Skate Shop so you can learn skateboard basics, tricks, riding the ramps and skateboard lingo.

All riders are required to wear a helmet. Instructor strongly suggests having wrist, elbow and knee guards.

Class will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays, Sept. 15 to Oct. 6 at Sunset Park Skate Park, 9200 Haligus Road. Fee for both residents and nonresidents is $50.

Kooky Kids basic cooking class: Kids, are you sick of PB&J sandwiches? Want to impress family and friends with your culinary skills?

The Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department and Simply Homemade has a cooking class that's simply delicious.

After a lively lesson in kitchen basics learning kitchen safety and sanitation techniques, you'll make two tasty meals to share with your family. Each entrée serves four to six people and each class features a different menu, so sign up for more than one. A snack and beverage will be provided during the class.

September classes: Regular cooking class is from 4 to 5:30 p.m., Thursday and a special themed class, "Slumber Party," will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 20 at Simply Homemade, 1500 Carlemont Drive, Crystal Lake.

Resident fee is $55; nonresident fee is $65 per class.

Tater Tot play date: Rain, rain, go away or we'll just stay inside to play.

Join the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department to connect with other moms, dads and caregivers while your little ones make friends and have fun playing. Gym mats and limited toys will be available. Feel free to bring your child's favorite toy.

Playtime is 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Multipurpose room for ages birth to 5. Fee is $2/child for both residents and nonresidents.

Kids' craft corner: Enjoy special time with your child as we meet to share in making a fall craft. Join instructor, Deena Ciavarella at the Lake in the Hills Village lower-level Classroom from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. or 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. Sept. 21. Skill enhancement may include scissors and glue use, painting, creative and imaginative thinking. Dress for messy fun. Class sizes are limited; register early. Adult participation required. Resident fee is $8 parent/child with $5 for each additional; nonresident fee is $10 parent/child with $6 for each additional child.

Brochure art contest: Attention artists between 5 and 12 years of age.

The Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department wants to feature your artistic creation in our Winter/Spring Brochure, maybe even on the cover.

Submit an original drawing/painting of your favorite winter or spring recreational activity on a white, 8½- by 11-inch piece of paper. Include your name, address, phone number and a brief description of the activity depicted in your picture.

Judges will select a winner and place the artwork on our Web site throughout the seasonal brochure.

Submissions will be accepted through Sept. 28. Submitted artwork will not be returned.

"High School Musical" trip: Grab your friends and join the phenomenon that's got kids singing and dancing to the tunes of "High School Musical." The trip is offered to youth in sixth through ninth grades.

Registration deadline is Sept. 20 to join the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department on a trip to the Metropolis Performing Arts Center in Arlington Heights to see a live performance of the ultimate "jock meets nerd" love story. A cast of nearly 50 artists will light up the stage with singing, dancing, music, comedy and great times -- they'll have your on your feet cheering for the underdog.

The show begins at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28. We'll stop for dinner on the way, so remember to bring spending money. Resident rate is $40; nonresident rate is $50. Fee includes ticket, chaperones and transportation. Departure from village hall is at 5:30 p.m. and will return at approximately 11 p.m.

For adults

Football Widows Club: Ladies, this is one time you'll gladly relinquish the remote. Let your significant other, disguised as a couch potato, hang out at home watching the game while you and your friends have a Girls' Day Out, a new program.

The Parks & Recreation Department of Lake in the Hills has fueled up the bus for a serious day of shopping at Aurora Outlet Mall. In hopes of replenishing the dent we put in our pocketbooks shopping, we'll finish the day trying our luck at the tables and slot machines at Hollywood Casino.

The bus leaves at 10 a.m. sharp on Sept. 16 from the Village Hall, 600 Harvest Gate, returning around 6 p.m.
