NIU signs proton doctors
The Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation will supply radiation oncologists to provide proton cancer treatment services at the Northern Illinois Proton Treatment and Research Center. The treatment facility is under construction in West Chicago and will be the first in the state to provide proton therapy for cancer patients. Northern Illinois University is the main backer of the project, but does not have a medical school at its DeKalb campus, which is why it sought a pact with Northwestern. Proton therapy differs from traditional cancer treatments by localizing the patient's exposure to radiation, which can reduce dangerous and costly side effects.
