St. Mark Lutheran Church at 200 S. Wille St. in Mount Prospect will have its first of three Lighthouses for Junior High students from 7-10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7. Congregation Beth Judea's Family Education Weekend will take place Thursday, Nov. 13, through Sunday, Nov. 16, featuring Mordechai Rosenstein as its Artist in Residence. Rosenstein has been creating myriad pieces utilizing vibrant colors and flowing lines that transform the art of Hebrew calligraphy into a modern day feast for the eyes for almost 30 years. The Hebrew alphabet is the essence of the art of Mordechai Rosenstein.

The activities for the weekend include a program with Mordechai and the Beth Judea "University" students and their parents Thursday evening, Nov. 13; a synagogue dinner, followed by Mordechai speaking about "My Journey as an Artist" Friday evening, Nov. 14; Shabbat Morning, Nov. 15 will be spent with the Gimel students and their parents before attending services in the main sanctuary; and an "Evening of Art" at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 (Cost $20/per person); and Sunday morning, Nov. 16, Mordechai will be creating art with the students and their parents.

The Our Lady of Destiny Annual Halloween Party is being held on Saturday, Oct. 25, in the auditorium at St. Mary's, 795 Center St., Des Plaines. The party will begin at 6 p.m. The cost is $20 per family, which includes two hours of fun: Halloween D.J., sweets, and drinks. There will be a costume parade/contest and raffle prizes. Creative seasonal decor in three Barrington-Inverness area residences and the Honquest Althrop Dream Home is the focus of the Friday, Nov. 7, Homes for the Holidays, Holy Family Catholic Academy's fourth annual holiday Housewalk. The 2008 Des Plaines CROP Walk for hunger relief kicks off at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, from the First Presbyterian Church of Des Plaines, 1755 Howard Ave. (at Maple). The 5K (approximately 3 miles) route goes to Our Lady of Hope Church in Rosemont and then back to First Presbyterian Church. Walkers and spectators are invited to come early to enjoy face painting by Jewels the Clown beginning at 1 p.m.

Members of the choirs at Trinity Lutheran Church, 675 E. Algonquin Road, Des Plaines, are selling the 2009 Entertainment Books for $20 each. Books can be purchased at the 5:30 p.m. service Saturdays and after the 8 and 10:30 a.m. services on Sundays, or in the church office during the week.

The St. Zachary Church Youth Group will be having a winter coat drive Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 25-26. Gently used coats and jackets will be collected after all of the Masses and will be donated to the St. Vincent DePaul Society. St. Zachary Church is at 567 W. Algonquin Road in Des Plaines. Christ Church-United Church of Christ in Des Plaines will host its annual Book Sale and Bake Sale, featuring nearly 800 individual items for sale, plus fresh bakery goods as well. Hours are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. Admission is free.

Children's book prices will range from 25 cents to $5; other items will range from 50 cents to $5, although most items will go for no more than $2.50. Coffee and tea will be provided, as well as tables for browsing or enjoying a snack from the bake sale. Carts will be on hand to help shoppers carry their finds around the sale. Paper and plastic bags will be available to carry out your purchases; although shoppers are welcome to bring their own.

Benjamin Britten's Abraham and Isaac will be sung by tenor David Portillo and Mezzo-soprano Katherine Calcamuggio, with Wayland Rogers at the piano Sunday, Nov. 2, at North Shore Unitarian Church, 2100 Half Day Road (Route 22) in Deerfield. The performance is part of a service on the controversial topic, offered twice at 9:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. The singers act out the ancient story: the father taking his son to Mount Moriah, building an altar where Abraham binds Isaac and after heartbreaking farewells raises his knife to slay him before God intervenes at the moment of sacrifice. Britten's pacifism echoes that of World War I poet and soldier, Wilfred Owen, and American sculptor, George Segal, all of whose striking comments on the parable brings the ancient into the present. • Wednesday, Oct. 29, 10:30 a.m.: In honor of Illinois Arts and Humanities Month and Celebrating Ethnic Heritage Month, Registered Music Therapist Rita Lopienski presents a program on "The Seven Metal Vibration Instruments of Tibet and Nepal". • Monday, Nov. 3, 3:30 p.m.: The Spanish Club of South Elgin High School presents Dia de los Muertos, in honor of All Saints Day and Mexico's Day of the Dead, where people remember departed souls in a festive mood with photographs of loved ones who have died, costumes of skeletons and lots of food.

• Monday, Nov. 17, 10:30 a.m.: In honor of International Drum Month, Native American Heritage Month and upcoming Thanksgiving, enjoy a Drumming Circle. Registered Music Therapist Rita Lopienski will present "Drumming Circles-The Rhythm of Life." Learn the history, religious usage and culture of exotic drums from around the world, and experience firsthand how playing these drums releases stress, promotes creativity and self-expression. Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 1234 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, will offer a a Learn @ Lunch program at noon Wednesday, Nov. 5. Christ Community Mennonite Church celebrates it's 20th anniversary, Sunday, Oct. 26, at 888 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg. Architect Jeff Whyte will share his process in designing the barn church and the symbols he incorporated into the building at 9:15 a.m. and Conference Pastor Wayne Hochstetter will preach during the 10:30 worship service. St. Peter Lutheran Church, 111 W. Olive St., Arlington Heights, is changing the format and location of the Monday night worship service. This will be a traditional service in the sanctuary and Communion will be celebrated on the first and third weekend of the month.

Women's programs

CWU of the Barrington Area will celebrate World Community Day on Friday, Nov. 7, at Faith Community United Church of Christ, 2023 Route 176 in Prairie Grove, beginning at 10:45 a.m. The guest speaker is Nancy McCarty, executive director of Music Theatre Workshop (MTW); she also serves as production manager and art director for all MTW productions. MTW is a nonprofit company dedicated to positive youth development through the arts.

CWU of the Barrington Area continues its prison ministry by inviting attendees to bring a gift/donation of new large-size panties, new or clean gently-used bras in all sizes, and white socks. Ten Thousand Villages will be displaying handmade, fairly-traded crafts available for purchase. "God's Wisdom Sets Us Free" is the theme of the 2008 World Community Day being celebrated by Church Women United in Northwest Cook County at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Elk Grove Presbyterian Church, 600 E.
