Briefs: Group home reopens

A little more than a year after a DuPage County Health Department group home in West Chicago was heavily damaged by fire, facility staff is marking its reopening. The group home houses eight clients from the county's mental health services division. An open house will be held before a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 142 Wood St.

Discussing emergencies

Lanny Russell, retired DeKalb Fire Department fire chief, will be the guest speaker during tonight's Wheaton Community Radio Amateurs Inc. meeting. Russell will discuss his experiences during the shootings that occurred at Northern Illinois University earlier this year. His presentation will explore how to plan and prepare for similar emergencies. The Wheaton Community Radio Amateurs will meet from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church, 615 Jefferson Ave., Wheaton. Glenbard parents win award

The Glenbard South High School Boosters named Tom and Laura Rose recipients of this year's Jerry Weinstein Memorial Award. The award is presented annually to individuals who exemplify commitment and dedication to the school. It's named for Jerry Weinstein, the first booster president. The award will be presented to the Roses during halftime at tonight's varsity football game. The Roses' children, Jamie, Mark, and Dan, attended Glenbard South from 1995 to 2005. The couple founded and organized an annual 3v3 basketball tournament for nine years. They also coordinated the Key Club Dodgeball Tournament.

Robbery suspects sought:

Naperville police are looking for information about two suspects believed to be responsible for a strong-arm robbery at Costco, 1320 S. Route 59 and unlawful use of credit card offenses at a Target, 1951 W. Jefferson Ave. The incidents occurred in the early afternoon of Sunday. In the robbery, a purse was taken from an elderly woman in the Costco parking lot. Credit cards from the victim's purse were used at Target. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest. Call (630) 420-6006.

Library referendum forum:

An informational forum about the Villa Park Public Library's plan for a property tax increase to construct and operate a new $25 million library is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4. As part of the Trustee Talks event, scheduled for 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the library, 305 S. Ardmore Ave., residents can speak with officials about two ballot questions related to the proposed 48,000-square-foot building. The referendum question seeks permission to borrow $24.9 million for a new building to be constructed at Central Boulevard and Ardmore, just south of the existing library. The second ballot question will ask voters to authorize a rate increase of 8 cents per $100 of equalized assessed valuation to operate the larger building. The measures together would add $235 annually to the property tax bill for the owners of a $250,000 home.

Recycling event planned:

DuPage County will hold a recycling/disposal event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the DuPage County Administration Building, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton. The collection will accept residential documents for shredding from 9 a.m. to noon with a limit of three boxes or grocery bags per person. All paper will be recycled; destruction of the documents will be done while you watch. DuPage County will also be accepting used electronics for recycling from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. No appliances, smoke detectors or any other items containing hazardous waste will be accepted. The free event is for DuPage County residents only.
