MCC to help women focus on fitness

McHenry County Department of Health is offering a free classroom-based, 12-week physical activity program for women, detailing practical ways to fit physical activity into your everyday life, while making heart-healthy and tasty food choices to reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke.

Classes are held from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Thursdays beginning Sept. 11 at McHenry County College, 8900 Route 14 in Crystal Lake. Session topics include goal setting, healthy eating tips, food label guidance, stress management and strength exercises.

Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death for American women. Some risk factors can't be changed such as family history, gender, increasing age, but several factors such as physical inactivity, tobacco use, high cholesterol and high blood pressure can be modified through lifestyle choices. Many women believe that cancer is more of a threat, but, according to the American Heart Association, nearly twice as many women in the United States die of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases as from all forms of cancer, including breast cancer.

Physical activity has many benefits - weight loss, lower blood pressure, diabetes control, improved mental health and strengthened bones. Class size is limited; call Lila Keller, RN at (815) 334-4580 to reserve a spot or email to lakeller@co.mchenry.il.us. This program is made possible by a grant from the Illinois Department of Public Health, Women's Health Division.
