Have you ever resolved to read the entire Bible cover to cover only to find yourself bogged down after a couple of days? St. Stephen Protomartyr Catholic Parish, 1280 Prospect Ave., Des Plaines, will host the 24-week Great Adventure Bible Timeline Story developed by Jeff Cavins.

The program will be covered in three, seven to eight session "semesters" from mid- September through mid-May. Sessions will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays led by Deacon Tony Towey. The same program will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays. The two-hour sessions will begin Sept. 16 and 17. The program begins with Genesis continues with Exodus and the historical books of the Old Testament and finishes with the Gospel of Luke and The Acts of the Apostles. The total cost of materials for the three semesters is $40.

The coed evening group of Community Bible Study, which meets in Mount Prospect, has opened its registration for the 2008-09 study year. A fee of $25 reserves a seat for adults in the class, offering area residents an opportunity for in-depth Bible study for more than 25 years.

Teaching Director Bob Kriskovich, a trained layman, has announced the course to be studied as "The Divided Kingdom," covering the Old Testament books of I and II Kings and the minor prophets. Community Bible Study, which is headquartered in Colorado Springs, offered the course for the first time during the 2007-08 study year.

St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church will offer Bible Study programs this fall. Two programs are planned: The Great Adventure: A Journey Through the Bible is a 24-session Catholic study program of 73 books of the Bible. It will be offered Monday evenings at 7 p.m. or Wednesday mornings at 9 a.m. The program includes a video lecture by Jeff Cavins, with classroom discussion. The fee for a workbook is $40, and the classes begin Sept. 15 or Sept. 17.

Matthew: The King and His Kingdom shows how Jesus builds on the foundation laid in the Old Testament to inaugurate the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. This class is recommended for those who already have an overall knowledge of the Bible. It will be offered Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday evenings, beginning Sept. 16 or 17. The program includes a video lecture by Jeff Cavins, with classroom discussion. Participants' workbook costs $30.

Both classes will be held at St. Alphonsus Liguori Parish, at 411 N. Wheeling Road in Prospect Heights. The Adult Bible Fellowships at First Baptist Church of Arlington Heights are offering four practical Bible studies this summer. One of the series is a verse-by-verse study of the Old Testament books of Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon called "Under the Sun." Another of the Adult Bible Fellowships is taking a look at the biblical reasons behind the Baptist Distinctives. A third group of adults are discussing the topic of "hospitality" from Scriptures and the last of the four options is a continuation of lessons from the New Testament book of II Peter.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Roselle welcomes the Pioneer Club for youth ages 5-12. This new program is offered to public school children as a way to expand their learning and faith connections.

Pioneer Club meets from 5:45 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays in Trinity's Family Life Center, September through February. It integrates spiritual and personal development and gives kids opportunities to learn new skills, make friends, have fun and develop Christian values.

The evening's schedule includes gym time, crafts, class time, music and an optional dinner. Once a month there is a family night where the entire family is invited. In addition, field trips, special celebrations and games are scheduled. Registration for this program is on Sept. 10. Beth Judea's two Aleph classes worked on a yearlong project that culminated in the Torah Assembly in May. The children walked in, with each student carrying his/her own Torah, and presented their Torahs to their families. Volunteers then talked about each part of the Torah they had made: the breast plate, yad, Rimonim, Torah cover, etc. Then the students read the summaries they had written of the stories from Genesis and part of Exodus.

Me and My Dad is for children entering kindergarten through second grade in the fall and their fathers. The program starts in September and parents can select a group on their own or they can choose to be placed in a group that is geographically desirable and age-appropriate. Registration for the 20082-09 school year for the Kingswood Parent's Day Out program has begun. Children must be 2 or 3 years of age by September 1, 2008 to enroll. If space permits, children will be accepted during the school year as they reach the age of 2 and 3.

Class time is from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Children attend either a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday class. Parent's may enroll their child/children for one day per week. Class size is limited to 16 children. The first day of class starts the week of Sept. 2.

Participants in the class pay a monthly tuition fee along with a $25 nonrefundable registration fee which is due at time of registration. The monthly tuition fee is as follows: Tuesday-$95, Wednesday-$100, Thursday-$95, Friday-$95.

Lubavitch Chabad of Northbrook presents "The Shofar Factory," a hands-on preholiday experience for the entire family, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 14. Craft a genuine shofar from a raw horn as you learn the entire process from the cleaning to the final polishing. Learn the skill of blowing the shofar. Gain insight into the significance of the shofar in celebration of Rosh Hashana. Children of the Shepherd Preschool, a nondenominational preschool open to children of all backgrounds and religions, is registering children for fall 2008 classes. Park Ridge Community Church will begin its confirmation program for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students in late August. All middle school youth are welcome to join.

Head to Heart (H2H) is a three-year, interactive confirmation program that focuses on growing small groups of middle school students into supportive communities of Christian faith which form the basis for middle school and high school youth ministry.

Confirmation classes for sixth-graders are scheduled for Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m. beginning Aug. 27. Congregation Beth Judea invites the community to welcome Shabbat with other families who have young children in a relaxed, fun and child-friendly atmosphere at the synagogue at Route 83 and Hilltop Road in Long Grove. Park Ridge Community Church welcomes all families to join in Rally Weekend activities Sept. 5-7. Gather your family, grab a blanket and celebrate the beginning of the school season with an outdoor movie, "Finding Nemo," at 8 p.m. Sept. 5 outdoors on the lawn next to the church parking lot at Prospect Avenue and Garden Street. Movie admission is free. Popcorn and refreshments will be sold, with proceeds benefiting the youth ministry fund. In case of inclement weather, the movie will be moved inside the church.

Sept. 7 is Rally Sunday. Families are welcome to tour Sunday school classrooms, meet the teachers, and register for Sunday school classes between 9 and 10 a.m. Everyone is invited to a 10 a.m. worship service followed by a church picnic at 11 a.m. featuring lawn games, a moonwalk, hot dogs, ice cream and refreshments.

Allen D. Edge, ordained minister and Chicago-based standup comedian, will be the featured presenter at Elk Grove Baptist Church's Block Party Weekend, Aug. 23-24. The two-day family fun outing will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday with games, music and concessions on the church campus until 5 p.m.

From 5 until 7 p.m., a family picnic and fellowship time will include presentations - family-oriented comedy presented by Pastor Edge, and gospel worship singer Parrish Watson, recording artist with a style.

Sunday morning during the 9:30 Bible Study hour, Pastor Edge will keynote a panel on "Christians in Worship Arts," discussing the use of artistic disciplines other than music in church worship. Also on the panel will be Joe Wright, founder of BLAPOP Records, a Black-Latin-Asian Pop music ministry.

At 11 a.m., Joe Wright's worship ensemble, Joe Jr. & Friends, will be musical guests at the outdoor worship service. Joe Jr. & Friends mix traditional hymns and contemporary praise songs with an R & B tempo that creates a unique experience. Also at 11, Pastor Edge offers his comic message and testimony, "The Edge of Sanity," which chronicles his 37 years in performing arts and the challenges transitioning from young artist to Christ-centered performer.

Saturday's block party and picnic are open to the public free of charge (although there are nominal fees for concessions). Sunday's worship service is also open to the public. The Men's Club of Congregation Beth Judea of Long Grove will host its 13th annual golf outing Aug. 24 at the Buffalo Grove Golf Club, 48 Raupp Boulevard, Buffalo Grove. First tee off will be at 11:30 a.m. New this year will be a Handicap Scramble (come as a foursome or the Men's Club will arrange one). Handicap: adjusting the scores by an amount that will even out the scores of the groups. Scramble: golfer takes the best shot and everyone in the group plays from that spot and the same with the following shots.

For the third year, St. John UCC is offering a labyrinth. Anyone who wishes to walk it is free to do so. No admission is charged. The labyrinth, mowed into the church's lawn at 1475 W. Algonquin Road, Palatine, at the corner of Algonquin and Roselle roads, is a seven-circuit adaptation of the 11-circuit labyrinth found in Chartres Cathedral in France. There is a single path going into and out the center. Unlike a maze, there are no dead ends or false turns. Walking the labyrinth is as easy as putting one foot in front of the other. There are many ways to approach your walk - there is no right way, not even a best way. All begin by quitting the mind and following the path that is right for you.

Unity World Day of Prayer will be held Sept. 11. Thousands of people around the world will once again join with Unity churches and prayer groups in a sacred partnership of prayer - the 15th annual Unity World Day of Prayer. Unity Northwest Church will participate by holding a special prayer service at 7 p.m. Sept. 10. This will begin a 24-hour prayer vigil held at the church, 259 E. Central Road, Des Plaines. The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1111 N. Elmhurst Road, Prospect Heights, announces the Summer Worship Schedule will be held through Sept. 7 with a single service at 9:30 a.m., using the liturgy "Now the Feast and Celebration." CrossWords is the theme of the worship service at the 9 and 10:30 a.m. services Aug. 24 at Meadows Baptist Church, 2401 Kirchoff Road, Rolling Meadows. D.B. The recently formed Holy Ghost Ladies Auxiliary's mission is to assist the Knights of Columbus Holy Ghost Council 4977 enriching the parish community through charitable work, leadership and spirituality. The group develops its own special projects and fundraising events, as well as supporting the Knights and other church ministries.
