ECC is closed for Labor Day holiday
Elgin Community College will be closed Monday, Sept. 1, in observance of Labor Day. The college will reopen at 8 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 2.

The Defenders Used Book Sales will be opening Sept. 2. They will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday and Saturday behind the office at 124 Cass Str., Suite 4 in the Woodstock Square.
The Defenders are looking for volunteer help to staff the sales. If you would be interested, contact the Defenders office at mcdef@owc.net.
Homeowners group to meet in Elgin
The Valley Creek Homeowners Association will hold a general open meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9 in the auditorium of Provena St. Joseph Hospital, 77 N. Airlite St., Elgin. The guest speaker will be Dan Larsen, City of Elgin Forester. He will be discussing the care of trees.
Here's your chance to "Ask the Vet"
Anderson Animal Shelter has scheduled an "Ask the Vet" event from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3 at the shelter auditorium, 1000 S. La Fox (Route 31) South Elgin. Come prepared with any questions for the veterinarian. He will answer questions on anything, including preventable diseases, vaccines and surgical procedures. This is be a great opportunity to get questions answered regarding the ongoing health and well being of your pet. Members of the shelter are admitted free; cost for nonmembers is $5. Still time for Algonquin Photo Contest
There is still time to submit your photos for the annual village of Algonquin photo contest. This year's theme is "Algonquin: A Green Community" and will focus on photos that depict the preservation, enhancement, and utilization of natural and open spaces in the village. Applications are available at Village Hall, 2200 Harnish Drive, Algonquin, or online at www.algonquin.org. All ages are welcome to participate and demonstrate your photographic talent. Selected photos will be used in publications and featured in the village's 2009 calendar. Entries are due Sept. 5.
