MCC, Borders to help adults literacy

McHenry County College is partnering with Borders stores in Crystal Lake and McHenry to support MCC's Adult Literacy Program during the month of August.

In August, anyone can buy a book at either the Crystal Lake or McHenry the Borders stores and donate it to Literacy Volunteers of Illinois for use in MCC's Adult Literacy Program. The process begins by choosing a book from the special display at the Borders store and by September, each donation will go toward changing lives of those in the literacy program.

The MCC Adult Literacy Program specializes in serving adults who have not completed high school or who cannot read and/or speak English at a functional level. The program includes Basic Reading for Adults, General Education Development, English as a Second Language, and Citizenship classes, as well as one-to-one tutoring and family literacy programming.

The store locations of the participating Borders stores are: 6000 Northwest Hwy., Crystal Lake and 2221 Richmond Road, McHenry.

Literacy Volunteers of Illinois is a statewide organization committed to developing and supporting volunteer literacy programs that help families, adults and out-of-school teens increase their literacy skills.
