Power restored after lightning strike cut off 35,000 customers

Crews have restored power to 35,000 customers in the northwest and west suburbs who lost electricity at around 11 a.m. today.

Lightning struck two substations, causing the loss of power this morning, ComEd spokeswoman Judy Rader said, adding electricity was restored at around 3 p.m.

The outage affected parts of Bartlett, Elgin, Hanover Park, Roselle, Schaumburg, Streamwood, South Elgin and West Chicago.

ComEd had nothing else unusual to report, Rader said. Thunderstorms bringing southern winds between 15 to 25 mph, and gusts up to 35 mph, were reported throughout the day.
