Rain suspends Jacobs, D-C game

Jacobs' baseball team has had trouble finishing games lately.

There was nothing the Golden Eagles could do about this one.

Jacobs was cruising along with a 6-0 lead after four innings of Wednesday's Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game against Dundee-Crown when a fierce rainstorm halted play after the Chargers recorded one out in the top of the fifth.

The suspended game will resume when the two teams meet again on Friday at Dundee-Crown.

Jacobs (9-7, 4-3) hopes to keep the bats rolling, while the Chargers (11-7, 4-3) hope to get them started.

Jacobs had 7 hits in just four innings including a first-inning home run from third baseman Matt Igara to give the Golden Eagles an early 1-0 advantage.

"The kids had a good game plan," Jacobs' coach Eric Sanders said. "They had a good approach."

Igara followed his home run with a double and run in the third inning and reached base on a walk in the fourth. Igara extended Jacobs' lead to 4-0 after scoring off of catcher Bobby Molinaro's RBI single.

"I hope we can keep up the tempo," Sanders said. "We've let some games get away from us."

Dundee-Crown's errors also aided in Jacobs' success. Jake Vojtsek's two-out single turned real ugly real quick for the Chargers. Patton Hofer looked to end the inning with a groundout a batter later, but a throwing error allowed Hofer to reach base and Vojtsek to score from first.

The Chargers then had a second error while trying to throw Hofer out at third, which allowed him to score on the play and the Golden Eagles to take a 3-0 lead after two.

Johnny Amann nailed an RBI double and scored in the fourth to put Jacobs up 6-.

Dundee-Crown finished the first four innings with 3 errors.

"You can't make 3 errors and win a game," Chargers' coach Fred Bencriscutto said. "We have to start swinging the bats."

Dundee-Crown got just 2 hits in the game, both of which came in the third inning. Jacobs' starter Mike Castillo struck out 7 batters in the first 4½ innings.

After finishing out the suspended game and conference game with Dundee-Crown on Friday, the Golden Eagles will bounce back and face an identical situation when they travel to Crystal Lake South on Monday. Jacobs and the Gators will resume their suspended game, which was tied at 5 in the top of the sixth inning before completing the scheduled conference game.
