Man killed in I-90 crash
A man on Tuesday died after his car crashed into a truck in a construction zone in the eastbound lanes of the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway near Des Plaines, state police said. Pawel Jaszczuk, 26, with addresses in Arlington Heights and Chicago, attempted to pass a car about 1 a.m. when his car hit the rear of a flatbed truck that was striping the road near Touhy Avenue, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled the cause of death as multiple injuries due to the crash. Police said a construction worker driving the truck was treated for injuries that weren't considered life-threatening. All eastbound lanes of the tollway were closed until 4 a.m., while traffic was re-routed on the shoulder.
Man claims illegal search
Claiming police conducted an illegal search, the defense for a Schaumburg man accused of having a homemade bomb in his estranged wife's Cary home is asking a court to throw out the evidence against him. If successful, the move could force McHenry County prosecutors to dismiss felony weapons charges filed against Dominic Bender, 28, after the November 2006 bomb discovery prompted authorities to evacuate several neighbors and led to the cancellation of classes for the day at nearby Prairie Hill School. The request mirrors one previously made in Cook County that ultimately led a judge to suppress evidence in similar charges there, forcing prosecutors to drop that case. The motion claims that police unlawfully searched Bender's Schaumburg home, finding weapons that led them to conduct a similar search at his wife's Cary residence. A hearing on the request is scheduled June 4.
