Briefs: Wheaton burglary scam
Two adults and a small child stole multiple pieces of jewelry from a home in Wheaton after tricking the owner, police said Thursday. Police said the three suspects pilfered rings, watches and other pieces while touring the house, which is for sale along Roosevelt Road. The theft occurred about 10 a.m. Wednesday. The adult suspects are both described as men, roughly 5 feet, 8 inches tall with dark hair. One male suspect is about 45, the other is about 25. The suspects left in a white vehicle with unknown Florida license plates. Anyone with information should contact Cmdr. Joseph Eversole at (630) 260-2161.
Pancake breakfast
The Kiwanis Club of Central DuPage County will serve blueberry or chocolate chip and animal-shaped pancakes from 7 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the American Legion Post 76, 1N150 Gary Ave., Wheaton. Tour focuses on AIDS Africa
Wheaton Academy is hosting "World Vision Experience: AIDS," an exhibit that allows Americans to step into the lives of children affected by HIV and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa, where about 25 million people are infected with HIV. Beginning today, the public is invited to go through the free, multimedia, interactive exhibit slated to visit 80 cities. Visitors walk through a replica of an African village and experience the effects of the pandemic in a real way as they listen to a personal audio track relating the story of one of four children -- Kombo, Babirye, Emmanuel and Mathabo. The free exhibit will be open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Abuse awareness
The third annual Child Abuse/Sexual Assault Awareness Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday outside the library, second floor of the College of DuPage Student Resource Center, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn. The fair is free and open to the community and features numerous local agencies as well as the Clothesline Project, a program focusing on violence against women who create shirts to express their emotions. Seniors' issues
DuPage County seniors, caregivers and their advocates will discuss federal and state issues about aging at a legislative forum beginning at 8 a.m. Monday at the Older Adult Institute of the College of DuPage, west campus. at 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn. Prevent cyber bullying
Parents can learn about cyber bullying at 7 p.m. Monday at Indian Trail Junior High, 222 N. Kennedy Drive, Addison. Members of the Addison Police Department will present information about what cyber bullying is and how to deal with it. The English-language presentation will be given in Gym 1 and a Spanish-language presentation will be offered in Gym 2. Fighting child abuse
Friends of the DuPage County Children's Center is reaching out to the public and businesses to help make the nonprofit group's annual fundraiser a success. The family brunch and silent auction is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27 at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace. Last year, the center investigated 363 cases of abuse involving 396 children. Proceeds from the event help pay for victim counseling, family support programs and staff training. Tickets are $50 for adults; $15 for children 12 to 5; or free for kids younger than 5. Time to flush in Wheaton
Wheaton's water division will begin its 2008 hydrant flushing program on Sunday and will continue for about two weeks. To minimize inconvenience to residents, hydrant flushing will occur between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. The purpose of this program is to flush out particles that accumulate in water lines. During or immediately following the hydrant flushing, water discoloration may occur. It is best not to draw large amounts of water if you experience discoloration. Residents with questions can call the water division at (630) 260-2090.
Roskam to join Reid's ride
U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam will join 12-year-old Reid Colliander at 7:40 a.m. Saturday just before the second annual Reid's Ride for Brain Cancer Research. More than 700 cyclists are expected to whiz through a 5K course through downtown Glen Ellyn to raise awareness and money for brain tumor research at Children's Memorial Hospital. Roskam will present Reid with a flag flown over the United States Capitol and a plaque recognizing his accomplishments.
