Wrap: Bartlett falls twice at Wendy's Classic

Bartlett softball coach Jim Wolfsmith wanted his team to see good competition at this weekend's Wendy's Classic in Ashland, Ohio.

And that's exactly what the Hawks are getting.

Bartlett fell twice Friday, losing to Avon (Ind.) 5-0 and then to Thomas Worthington of Ohio, 6-5 in nine innings.

"It's good for us to play these games and have the pressure but it would have been nice to come away with at least one win today," Wolfsmith said. "We didn't have out A game today."

Playing in its first Wendy's Classic, the Hawks (11-3) ran into Avon all-stater Jenny Esparaza in the opener. Esparaza struck out 15 Bartlett batters and allowed only 2 singles, both to Lauren Wydra.

"She's the real deal," said Wolfsmith of Esparaza, a junior. "She just overwhelmed us."

In their second game, the Hawks fell behind early but came back to tie the game before losing in international tie-breaker in the ninth on an outfield error.

Nicole Beck had a 2-run double for Bartlett and Rachel Anello's two-out single in the bottom of the seventh scored Callie Dennison with the tying run. Elizabeth Kay also had a double and Concetta Lampugnano an RBI triple for the Hawks.

Dennison was the starting pitcher, going 4 innings and allowing 2 runs. JV callup Heather Motz started fifth inning and was relieved by Wydra, who fell victim to a costly outfield error that scored 2 runs.

"We had plenty of opportunities to win the game in regulation and we just didn't cash in," Wolfsmith said.

Today, Bartlett takes on the top-ranked team in Ohio in Elyria, as well as North Canton Hoover of Ohio. Wolfsmith said Wydra, nursing a slightly sore shoulder, would not pitch today, as the Hawks play a key Upstate Eight Conference game at Lake Park Monday.

"These games are important for us in terms of seeing the kind of competition we'll see in the postseason," Wolfsmith said. "But that Lake Park game is pretty big too and we want Lauren fresh for that one."

Lake Park split its games at the Wendy's Classic Friday, beating Cicero North-Syracuse of New York 6-5 and falling to Elyria 3-2.
