Another day at the office for Cary-Grove Trojans

The Cary-Grove football team has been shredding teams so thoroughly this season it hasn't needed extra help from the opposition.

A young Jacobs squad gave the Trojans plenty of help anyway.

The Golden Eagles fumbled 6 times and the Cary-Grove defense and special teams recovered 5 of those loose balls as the Trojans cruised to a 49-0 halftime lead en route to a 57-0 homecoming victory in the Valley Division opener for both Fox Valley Conference teams in Cary Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans (5-0, 1-0) were dominant on both sides of the ball, outgaining Jacobs 371 yards to 8 overall and 313 to -37 in the first half, when Jacobs failed to pick up a first down against Cary-Grove's starting defense.

The Trojans have outscored their five opponents 260-6, and the shutout by the defense was the fourth in five games.

"We're just moving fast out there, playing solid defense," said defensive end Matt Liebforth, who recorded 2 of the Trojans' 4 sacks. "My sacks today were coverage sacks. We had good coverage across the field. I give credit to our defensive backs (Alex Lyons, Danny Sarillo, Danny Scott, Trent Sorensen and Josh Nelson). We just play fast and it's all clicking right now."

The Jacobs highlight of the game occurred in the first quarter, when its defense halted Cary-Grove's first drive at the 20-yard line by stuffing Trojans quarterback Tyler Krebs for no gain on a fourth-and-short keeper. But the Golden Eagles gained no traction offensively and were forced to punt 3 plays later.

Under pressure, the Jacobs punter whiffed on the punt attempt and the fumble was recovered at the Jacobs' 10-yard line by Sarillo. Krebs scored 2 plays later on a 9-yard run to open the deluge.

On Cary-Grove's next possession, Krebs connected with 6-foot-4 wide receiver Chad McCarron on a 21-yard pass play. The second of Nick Taylor's 6 extra points made it 14-0 with 4:58 left in the first quarter.

A Stu Gaulke hit forced a Jacobs fumble on the ensuing kickoff return at the Jacobs 22-yard line, and Trojans senior speedster Alex Hembrey scored 2 plays later on a 13-yard run. A 4-yard touchdown run by Krebs and a 9-yard pass from Krebs to McCarron ballooned the lead to 35-0 with 9:28 left in the second quarter.

"We've thrown a lot more compared to last year," said Krebs, who completed 7-of-14 passes for 99 yards and 2 touchdowns in less than two quarters of action. "We've got two really good receivers (McCarron and 6-4 Jake Fields). They're big and they're fast and they can jump up and get the ball. We're trying to get balance between the run and the pass."

Sarillo blocked a Jacobs second-quarter punt, which Nick Underwood picked up at the 22-yard line and returned for a touchdown with 7:24 left in the first half, and Steve Hapanovich's 15-yard scoring run capped a near-perfect half for the Trojans.

"We're coming out here and executing regardless of what the situation may be," said Cary-Grove coach Bruce Kay, whose team won its sixth straight homecoming game. "We're happy with that."
