Immaculate Conception gets some revenge on St. Edward
Tuesday night's match didn't have the same meaning as the last time Immaculate Conception and St. Edward stepped on the volleyball court as opponents.
But getting a little revenge on the team that ended the previous season is still welcome.
The Knights ruined the Green Wave's home and season opener Tuesday with a 25-22, 25-20 victory in Elgin.
"They ended our season last year so it's nice to come in here and win," Knights coach Jean Field said.
St. Edward beat IC three times last season, including a 25-22, 25-23 victory in the Class 2A Byron supersectional, en route to its third-place state finish in Class 2A.
Most of that Green Wave team has graduated, as they return only three seniors. One of those seniors, Holly Knott, is injured and missed Tuesday's match.
The Knights (1-1) jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the opening game and led 11-4 after a Maggie Ryan kill. A kill by St. Edward's Callie Johnson tied the game at 16-16. The game was 22-22 before a kill from Abby West gave IC the lead. A solo block by Kellyanne Remy made it 24-22. A lift violation by the Green Wave gave the Knights the opening game.
"We really wanted to start strong and follow it all the way to 25," said West, a senior. "We had a lot of good communication. And our hitting was on."
Game 2 was close throughout as IC never led by more than three points until scoring four of the last five points for the 25-20 win. The Green Wave earned their first lead of the match, 17-16 after another Callie Johnson kill. That lead lasted just one point and they did not lead again.
West and Remy combined on a block on match point.
"We have a lot of new kids out there on the floor," St. Edward coach Jaime Dovichi said. "After graduating so many kids last year, we have a lot of kids in new roles."
Ryan led the Knights with 6 kills. West and Remy each added 5 kills. West also had 10 assists.
Sarah Norman had a team-high 8 kills and 11 digs for the Green Wave. Stephanie Igielski finished with 6 kills. Annie Kelly had 19 assists.
