Divers search for man in Des Plaines River

The Wheeling Fire Department and a dozen other departments were working well into Saturday night on a call that someone disappeared in the Des Plaines River, authorities said.

Gavino Alvarez Diego of Prospect Heights was walking along the river with another man when he fell earlier in the evening, according to Steve Mayberry, a spokesman for the Cook County Forest Preserve police.

Mayberry said several witnesses saw Diego go into the water.

Officials said at about 5 p.m. divers were summoned to the river near South Milwaukee Avenue and East Hintz Road.

As of 9 p.m. Saturday night, the operation was still ongoing.

Divers and fire personnel from the following agencies were assisting: Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Des Plaines, Elk Grove Village, Gurnee, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Long Grove, Mount Prospect, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Schaumburg and Wauconda.
