Ortiz powers Round Lake
As a quarterback the last couple of falls, Round Lake senior Matt Ortiz showed he can throw a ball.
He can hit one, too.
Ortiz had himself a baseball game to remember Wednesday.
He had a grand slam, triple and 6 RBI to lead the Panthers to a 17-1 win over host North Chicago. Ortiz even drew a walk, as Round Lake evened its record at 3-3 under first-year coach Ed Adamson, while improving to 2-0 in the North Suburban Prairie Division.
Dylan Havrilak went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI for the Panthers, Mike Fuller had a triple and 2 RBI, and Chris Rana added a double and an RBI.
Round Lake freshman Anthony Gutierrez pitched 3 innings, striking out four, and Wes Carlson tossed the final 2 frames, fanning three.
Carmel 15, Waukegan 4: Cale St. Clair improved to 3-0, and Donald Stopka had 2 doubles and 4 RBI, as the host Corsairs cruised in the nonconference game.
Mike Pudlo had a double and 2 RBI for Carmel (9-2), while Kyle Bessa tripled and knocked in a pair.
Antioch 8, Grant 3: Andy Danna went 2-for-2 with a homer and 3 RBI, as the host Sequoits avenged Tuesday's 10-0 loss.
Dillon Healy went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Antioch (2-4, 1-1 North Suburban Prairie). Josh Lewis (1-0) pitched 6 innings, allowing 1 earned run and striking out seven.
Prairie Ridge 6, Lake Zurich 5: Tanner Witt had a double for the host Bears, who saw the Wolves score 3 runs in the fifth to snap a 3-3 tie.
Lake Zurich fell to 4-5-1.
Lakes 8, CL South 2: Eric Lopez went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored for the Eagles in the nonconference game.
Kevin Kelly was 2-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 2 stolen bases for Lakes (3-4-1). D.J. Snelton picked up the win to improve to 3-0.
