Planksgiving celebrated at Friendship Village of Schaumburg

It's trending in pop culture, and Friendship Village of Schaumburg residents are eagerly jumping in. Or, in this case, "planking" right in. #PlankingChallenge encourages individuals to "plank," which is the best exercise to strengthen one's core and abdomen. Earlier this week, the senior living community celebrated its first Planksgiving.

The lifestyles team at Friendship Village put together this plank challenge for the residents, identifying three levels of difficulty for women and for men. Those holding the plank position for the longest amount of time in each category earned a prize.

Fourteen residents competed with the overall winner, Thelma Laulhata, holding her plank for seven minutes and 50 seconds. Among the athletes were Velma Robinson and Mary E. Kelly, who are both 96 years old.

"I encouraged residents to participate in the Planksgiving challenge to get them out of their comfort zone and try something new. Planks are a great core-strengthening exercise. They help improve mobility while also strengthening your arms, shoulders and back. A strong core plays a critical role in preventing injuries and improving the ability to complete everyday tasks. It was inspiring to see the residents do so well at this challenge," said Kayla Jewel, fitness and wellness program specialist.
