Finding harmony at New Tradition Chorus
Nichelle Pajeau's musical background began with instruments - piano, violin, and cello – and her dad was a professional musician. But she never sang with any groups.
Over 20 years ago, she signed up for guitar classes at the Old Town School of Folk Music and discovered singing.
“They wanted the students to sing while playing the guitar. Next, I attended harmony singing classes at The School and realized I preferred singing to playing instruments.”
Nichelle says she was hooked and started taking vocal lessons.
Then, she found harmony – and the New Tradition.
She recently returned to the Old Town School and joined a tag singing workshop that was being taught by New Tradition director Mitch Greenberg.
Nichelle says, “After about one song in, I thought, 'I need to have this kind of harmony in my life.' ”
Then she saw the ad for free singing lessons at New Tradition.
Nichelle started attending the class and NT rehearsals.
“I didn't really know what to expect since I had never even heard of a barbershop chorus. I was very happy to hear and see that there were many songs that I already know and love.”
Four weeks later, she easily passed the audition and was voted into membership by the board.
When asked her reaction to finally joining a singing group, she said, “I think what stands out for me was the first time hearing everyone sing together. Everyone is a really talented singer and the combined sound of everyone singing together just filled my soul.”
“I was looking for a bunch of wonderful people to sing beautiful and amazing harmonies with -- and that's what it seems I have found. I am looking forward to having my voice be part of New Tradition's holiday show in December."
Join Nichelle for the "Sounds of the Season" holiday concert at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 2-3 at Glenview Community Church, 1000 Elm St. in Glenview.
