Anna and Ernie Cairo Present Lurie's Children's Hospital with a $50,000 Donation

On February 8, 2023, Ernie and Anna Cairo presented a $50,000 check to the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.

In 2011, Ernie and Anna lost their 8-year-old son Dominic to Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma after a 3-year battle. Ernie and Anna have been tireless volunteers and fundraisers for the cure of childhood cancer though the St. Baldrick's Do It for Dominic Hero Fund.

Childhood cancer research has progressed in recent years, but after accidents, cancer is still the second leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 14, according to the American Cancer Society. The STAR Act was signed into law in January of 2023 to help advance pediatric cancer research and child-focused cancer treatments, while also improving childhood cancer surveillance and providing resources for survivors and those impacted by childhood cancer.

Dr. Waterhouse and his team will use the grant money to work on cures for pediatric cancer so no other family has to suffer the loss of a young child.
