NSYMCA Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month
The North Suburban YMCA is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15-October 15, showcasing Latin American flags and important figures in the Hispanic community throughout the Y. As part of the mission of diversity and inclusion, the NSYMCA's Diversity, Inclusion & Equity Committee plans activities to celebrate the uniqueness in its communities.
In honor of 2022 Hispanic Heritage Month, the North Suburban YMCA will take the opportunity to live its mission of providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive community to all by showcasing important figures, speakers and contributions made by the Hispanic community. The Y will celebrate its Hispanic staff, volunteers, and members, and their impact they have made on their community by sharing their stories, artwork, and cultural information.
The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988. Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The theme for 2022 is "Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation."
"We have a responsibility to acknowledge and learn more about the Hispanic community and the impact they have had on history. By acknowledging and learning more, we can celebrate diversity and create a more inclusive society. Our focus is on building stronger communities where everyone feels welcome and we work together for the common good," said Megan Vazquez, senior director of Wellness at the NSYMCA.
