NSYMCA collects school supplies for kids in need
Recognizing the high cost of goods in today's economy, the North Suburban YMCA collected thousands of school supply donations, including backpacks, pencils, pens, crayons, markers and notebooks, during its School Supply Donation drive held June 30-July 31.
The donations help ensure that students in Wheeling's Twain Elementary School in District 21 and Forrestal Elementary in Great Lake's School District 187 have the supplies they need to start the school year off right.
The Y's School Supply Drive is a collaborative effort made possible by the YMCA's Social Responsibility Committee.
"We wanted to ease some of the costs associated with the rising prices in stores as our community sends their children back to school. The supplies go straight to the classroom, ready for the children to use on the first day of school," said Karen Brownlee, the NSYMCA's Adult Program coordinator and member of the Y's Social Responsibility Committee.
Donations were distributed to Twain Elementary and Forrestal Elementary on Aug. 11.
"School supplies from this drive are a huge help to our families and our teachers," said Cara Kranz, principal at Forrestal Elementary.
"Supplies can be expensive, especially for teachers who often pay for their own classroom supplies needed for classroom learning. We are so grateful for the Y and their generous support."
Monetary donations for school supplies can be made at the NSYMCA, 2705 Techny Road in Northbrook. The NSYMCA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, open and accessible to all.
