North Suburban YMCA Honored with Diversity in Business Award for Second Consecutive Year

The North Suburban YMCA has been selected as an honoree of the Daily Herald Diversity in Business Awards for the second consecutive year. The Diversity in Business Awards honors businesses who have shown exceptional commitment to promoting practices that advance diversity and inclusion in the workplace, in business leadership, and who bolster equality across all areas of diversity; including age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, race and religion.

"We're so grateful to be honored with a Diversity in Business Award for the second year in a row. As a nonprofit organization, the Y welcomes all people regardless of ability, age, background, income, ethnicity/race, faith, gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation. The Y believes that, in a diverse world, we are stronger when we are inclusive, when our doors are open to all, and when everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive," said Kathy Fielding, CEO of the North Suburban YMCA.

With one single-pointed mission, to help build strong families and individuals in an all-inclusive, welcoming environment, most of the North Suburban YMCA's efforts go towards serving others for the greater good, anticipating needs before they arise, and creating new programs and services for those that need it most.

In addition, the Y and its DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Committee unites Y staff, members, and the community partners and agencies in diverse volunteer service projects such as partnering with the Korean Rotary Club to create Café Voca, a coffee bar in the Y's lobby that provides vocational training and employment experience for individuals with intellectual and developmental challenges; Gender 101 Training for the NSYMCA staff facilitated by Lurie Children's Hospital; and the development of specific programming and events for Black History Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, Women's History Month, Pride Month, and National Hispanic Heritage Month.

An awards ceremony was presented virtually via livestream on August 11. The Honorees, 14 total, will also be profiled in a special publication of the Daily Herald Business Ledger on Monday, Sept. 18.
