Mitchell Museum of the American Indian to Unveil Native Youth Designed Mural at Special Recognition Celebration and Open House on August 26

The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian will celebrate the unveiling of a new Native youth-designed mural on Friday, August 26, from 4-7 p.m. The special event includes a recognition ceremony for the nine Native youth mural artists, followed by an open house and reception. Museum members and the public are invited to view the new youth mural, explore the Indigenous medicine garden, tour the collections, meet local Native children's author Maria Des Jarlait, and sample Native foods.

The mural is part of a collaboration with St. Kateri Youth Circle, a nonprofit that provides programming on Native American values and traditions for Native youth in the Chicago area. The mural concept was entirely youth-driven and designed to reclaim space and share Indigenous knowledge and tells the Anishinaabe Creation Story with representations of nature and animals in the Woodland art style. The brightly colored mural will be displayed on the Mitchell Museum's front exterior facing Central Street in Evanston.

The Mitchell Museum will also be debuting its new online exhibit featuring the interactive stories from children's books, "Atika's Medicine" and "I'm Not a Costume," written by Maria Des Jarlait (Arikara/Ojibwe), a Chicago-based author and educator. Des Jarlait will also be on hand to share her stories and sign copies of her books for attendees.

This family-friendly event is open to the public, and admission is free for Mitchell Museum members and $25 for nonmembers. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the time of admission. For more information about this event, visit
