Local League of Women Voters celebrate 100th anniversary

On Sunday, Aug. 8, approximately 50 locals gathered to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the League of Women Voters of Downers Grove, Woodridge, Lisle. The event was held at Hummer Park Pavilion in Downers Grove.

Federal, state and local municipality representatives attended.

Anniversary co-chairs Hilary Denk and Mary Hobein welcomed all who came to help the League celebrate. Hobein, also League president, highlighted the high tech activities the League had done for the 2020 elections held during the pandemic to educate citizens on their choices.

U.S. Rep. Sean Casten (Illinois' 6th Congressional District) offered his congratulations. Anne Stava-Murray, Illinois House representative of the 81st District, congratulated the League and added that the Illinois caucus was only one of two state caucuses in the country that held a female majority.

Other elected officials attending included DuPage County Board members Julie Renehen (District 3) and Paula Deacon Garcia (District 2); Mary Jo Mullen from the Lisle Village Board; and Leslie Sadowski-Fuggit, Chris Gilmartin, and Rich Kulovany from the Downers Grove Village Council.

Azisti Dembrowski, representing the League of Women Voters of Illinois, added onto the good wishes and highlighted the nonpartisan goals of the League: voting access, voter education, and policy advocacy of the both state and national organization.

After the speakers, the group sang "Happy Birthday" and all were invited to share cupcakes and lemonade.
