Glenbard Parent Series to focus on 'Rethinking Parental Pressure' Aug. 19

On Thursday, Aug. 19, the Glenbard Parent Series: Navigating Healthy Families will present “Rethinking Parental Pressure: A Positive Approach to Encouraging Your Child to Be Their Best Self” with Christopher Thurber and Hendrie Weisinger at 7 p.m. via Zoom. Go to glenbardgps.org for the link to this webinar. To be placed on a reminder list for GPS events or submit a question in advance, send an email to gilda_ross@glenbard.org.

Well-meaning adults can put immense pressure on young people, and this often leads to under-performance and mental health problems. In their book, “The Unlikely Art of Parental Pressure,” Thurber and Weisinger suggest the question to ask is not, “How much pressure should I put on my child to succeed?” but, “How do I transform that pressure into a positive force?”

This webinar will outline how to reframe unhealthy pressure into a guiding force that will help all children navigate their lives more effectively, and in the process, boost the quality of parent-child relationships.

Thurber is a thought leader in positive youth development. Thurber has served as a psychologist and instructor at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire since 1999.

Weisinger is a world-renowned psychologist trained in clinical, counseling, school and organizational psychology. He is the originator of criticism training, an expert in the application and development of emotional intelligence and creator of the emerging field of pressure management. Weisinger is the author of “Performing Under Pressure: The Science of Doing Your Best When It Matters Most,” and “The Power of Positive Criticism.”
