Want a career in the future of energy? Sign up for Nicor Gas Career Academy
The Nicor Gas Career Academy is a free, six-week job-readiness program designed to prepare participants for entry level work in the utility industry, with a focus on natural gas.
The program is sponsored by Nicor Gas, IBEW Local 19, Quad County Urban League, NPL Construction Co., INTREN, KS Energy Services and Pipe Strong.
The session runs July 6 to Aug. 13, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Curriculum focuses on natural gas operations training, but also integrates core math concepts, safety, technology and employability skills, as well as personal and professional development. Participants will also job shadow in the Nicor Gas call center to understand the customer experience and in the field alongside meter readers and operations employees.
With a need to hire job-ready candidates, Nicor Gas, together with NPL and the Quad County Urban League, launched the Nicor Gas Career Academy in 2018. Since then, 73 have graduated from the program and more than 50% have been offered employment with Nicor Gas or one of its workforce partners.
The fifth cohort of the Nicor Gas Career Academy will conclude in August with interview preparation and a graduation ceremony. Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, June 30.
