Annual Bob Blazier Run for the Arts raises funds for Raue Center

If you're known for bringing the drama, then you can't just have any old, run-of-the-mill 5K event. After all, jogging shorts are just so blasé, darling.

Instead, Raue Center for the Arts wants you to come dressed as your favorite character from movies, TV, books, or music to take part in the 24th Annual Bob Blazier Run for the Arts, which will take place at 8 a.m. May 2.

The event will start and end at the arts center, 26 N. Williams St., Crystal Lake.

So, ride in on your broom as Harry Potter, show some sparkle as Elvis or get ready to be faster than a speeding bullet as Superman. Whatever you do, be creative in your starring role raising funds for the arts.

James Knight, economic development manager for the arts center, shared more information about the fundraiser.

Q: What is the Raue Center? Give a brief overview of what the organization does and who you serve.

A: Raue Center is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit performing arts center in the heart of downtown Crystal Lake dedicated to enriching the lives of all through the arts.

As a restored, 1920s regional theater named for its benefactor - Lucile Raue - Raue Center has attracted the finest stars, Broadway shows, musicians and artists. Named on the League of Historic American Theatres, the 750-seat theater has become a true destination.

Throughout our 20-year history, we've accomplished wonderful things in our mission to "Bring the Arts to All." These include showcasing Tony, Emmy, Grammy, and Academy Award winning artists, hosting a variety of great community groups, and starting an award-winning theater company, just to name a few.

Q: Where do the majority of your donations come from?

A: As only 30% of our typical yearly revenue comes from ticket sales, Raue Center has been fortunate to have seen direct engagement and support from thousands of community members in our two decades of service.

In addition to their staunch support, Raue Center has also partnered with local businesses and restaurants, as well as being awarded grants on a regional and federal level.

Q: What are some of your programs?

A: We are very proud of our educational programs: Mission Imagination and Sage Studio, both of which have seen tremendous growth over the years. In addition, we program a number of national touring acts and are proud to be the home of our award-winning theater company, Williams Street Repertory.

Q: Tell us about the 24th Annual Bob Blazier Run for the Arts. How does it work?

A: The starter's pistol fires for the 5K at 8 a.m. and the 1-mile walk begins shortly thereafter. Runners will race through the beautiful streets of downtown Crystal Lake, finishing right where they started - in front of our historic theater.

Medals are handed out for the top three finishers in each age group, and the fastest male and female times will take home a Bob Blazier Bobblehead Trophy.

You can also show team spirit by participating in the Team Challenge. Get a group together to compete in four categories: Greatest Overall, Most Money Raised, Most Team Spirit, and Best Average Team Time.

Q: How can people participate?

A: Registering is easy! Registrations for the 5K and 1-Mile Run/Walk can be completed by visiting raceroster.com/events/2021/47113/bob-blazier-run-for-the-arts; by stopping by Raue Center on the morning of the race, Sunday, May 2; or either of our packet pickup dates, from noon to 4 p.m. April 30 or May 1.

The cost to participate is $35 for the 5K and $25 for the 1-mile walk.

For those who can't make it on race day, a "Virtual Runner" option is available. Registering as a virtual runner can be done through the same link as above.

A: For the past 24 years, Raue Center has been honored to host the race that bears Bob Blazier's name. For over 50 years, Bob has exemplified what it means to be a champion for his community. His work in the educational, medical, and business fields serves as a shining example for us all.
