St. Francis High School National Honor Society hosts eighth-grade leadership conference

On Saturday, Nov. 7, the members of St. Francis High School's Chapter of the National Honor Society hosted "Rise Up" - an eighth-grade Leadership Conference. St. Francis students led activities and workshops that focused on leadership, teamwork, character building, and service.

"Rise Up is a great opportunity for eighth-grade students to learn about leadership, but to also make new friends. It's a super fun event!," said Kate Chaparro, Class of '21, St. Francis High School NHS executive board officer.

The annual event is a great opportunity for students who want to become better leaders in their school, learn how to prepare for high school and reflect on the importance of attitude and character.

"What better way to teach eighth-grade students about what it is like to be in high school and use their talents to be leaders than from our NHS students," said Elizabeth Brand, NHS Adviser, St. Francis High School. "It was an impressive event because the students created the workshops, practiced them, received peer feedback and used their creativity to make an engaging day for the participants. They ran the whole conference and welcomed our visitors with a sense of community. This year they focused on helping the participants find their talents and gifts and explore how they can use them to be a leader in their communities and in the future as high school students."

"One pillar of NHS is leadership," said Owen Frausto, Class of '21, St. Francis High School NHS executive board officer. "We want our members to utilize their leadership skills, but that also extends to the community. Our goal is to teach middle school students how to use skills and tools they need for success in high school and beyond."

St. Francis High School's Chapter of the National Honor Society first hosted Rise Up in 2014 with the leadership of Sofia Melgoza as the NHS president.

St. Francis High School is a Catholic, college preparatory learning community that promotes spiritual, academic, physical, and social development in the daily presence of Jesus Christ.
