New Life for Haiti hosts meal packing event in Plainfield
New Life for Haiti hosted a meal packing event at LifeSpring Community Church in Plainfield on Feb. 1.
New Life for Haiti, in conjunction with Lifeline Ministries, hosted its second meal packing event on Feb. 1.
It was an inspiring day as volunteers from 10 different churches came together to pack over 10,000 meals in just under 90 minutes, to feed the hungry in the Grand Anse River valley of Haiti! With food costs up over 40% in Haiti and food insecurity at its highest in several years in Haiti, this food will greatly help the Haitian children, elderly, and families that New Life for Haiti serves.
New Life for Haiti is grateful for the volunteers who dedicated their morning to working together to bring nourishment and hope to our brothers and sisters in Haiti during this time of struggle and uncertainty. Volunteers paid admission to the event ($25 or $15 per child), which offset the cost of the ingredients for the meal packs and the cost to transport the food to Haiti.
It is the mission of New Life for Haiti to give children a chance at a future, to meet the urgent needs of families, to foster new economic opportunities, and to influence cultural thinking toward a sustainable change within the Grande Anse River Valley on the southern peninsula of Haiti, while acting as the hands and feet of Jesus to bring the life-giving and hopeful message of Christ.
In an area where most of the people live under the national extreme poverty line of less than $1.23 a day, New Life for Haiti works to combat hunger and poor living conditions through feeding programs in schools and for the elderly, as well as responding to natural disasters that occur frequently in Haiti, such as earthquakes, tropical storms, and hurricanes. New Life for Haiti has conducted home and church rebuilding programs after natural disasters and has built homes for displaced families or those with disabilities.
Less than 20% of children attend school in the Marfranc area where New Life for Haiti works, so they have built seven schools, including a model school (The School of Hope) to model a different philosophy and better teaching methodology in a rural area, plagued by antiquated, ill-equipped schools. New Life for Haiti trains teachers who lack access to quality training.
In a country with over 430,000 orphans, New Life for Haiti is also rescuing orphaned children from trafficking in a country with hundreds of thousands are living in domestic servitude, opening an orphanage in 2018 with 22 children.
Looking ahead to 2020-21, New Life for Haiti will be building a combined community center/church and a small medical clinic in the community of Rivye Mawo (where they already built a school and well), where the literacy among adults is only 2%.
