Doctor to share his journey with depression at Glenbard Parent Series event Feb. 11

On Tuesday, Feb. 11, the Glenbard Parent Series: Navigating Healthy Families will present "The Secret Sadness of Depression" with Dr. Andrew Solomon. The program will begin at 7 p.m. at Glenbard West High School, 670 Crescent Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.

Depression knows no social or economic boundaries, and it has a unique impact on each person affected. Solomon will examine depression in both personal and scientific terms. Drawing on his own longtime struggle with depression and interviews with fellow sufferers and doctors, he will reveal the subtleties, complexities and agony of this disease.

Solomon shares his experience of facing down depression with the utmost empathy for those who suffer and the people who love them. He will discuss updated information on various treatment approaches and detail his experience with some of them.

Solomon's memoir, "The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression," won the National Book Award, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and was a worldwide bestseller published in more than 20 languages. He also published, "Far From the Tree: Parents, Children & the Search for Identity," an examination of how families invest their love in accommodating children with physical, mental and social disabilities. He is the founder of the Solomon Research Fellowships in LGBT Studies at Yale University and is a professor of Clinical Psychology at Columbia University.

Continuing professional development units are available.
