Northbrook Symphony Orchestra Partners With Bravo Waukegan to Provide Music Opportunities to Waukegan Students

The Northbrook Symphony Orchestra and Lake Forest-based Bravo Waukegan enjoy a strong partnership that has enabled both non-profits to work together to provide music opportunities to Waukegan students. Most recently, the NSO presented $500 college scholarships to Jason Farias and Eliana Aguilar, two Waukegan music students who will attend college in the fall.

Farias will be a freshman at Elmhurst College, where he plans to double major in jazz studies and music business. He explained his relationship to music in these words: "Music in my life has nurtured me into a reflective student who will always strive for self-improvement."

Aguilar will be a freshman at Augustana College, where she plans to major in music education. "Nothing else has ever clicked for me like music. Music is my passion," said Aguilar, commenting on the role of music in her life.

"Part of our mission at the NSO is to collaborate with educational organizations to enhance the awareness of and interest in music and orchestra. We also look for opportunities to foster the development of young local musicians. Our partnership with Bravo Waukegan has enabled us to increase music opportunities among Waukegan public school students - most recently through these scholarships," said James Karagianis, NSO board president.

"We appreciate the NSO and its strong partnership with Bravo. We are a nonprofit organization supporting music education in Waukegan public schools, and our ability to increase music opportunities for students and teachers has been strengthened through our partnership with the NSO. The NSO's support has included educational music events; a successful instrument drive that has generated more than 110 instruments; and these college scholarships that will be put to use by two passionate musicians who are interested in continuing the study of music," said Karey Walker, Bravo Waukegan executive director.
