Get your orders in to stock your fish pond

Need fish for your pond? If you have a new pond or an old pond in need of restocking, you can order your fish from.

Included in the sale are channel catfish, largemouth bass, triploid grass carp, hybrid sunfish, hybrid redear, fathead minnows and bluegill.

Triploid grass carp is used for biological weed control and takes approximately two years to provide good control.

Stocking rates are based on percentage of weed cover and size of pond. If your pond has weed cover of 20 to 40 percent, five triploid carp per lake acres should be stocked; 40 to 60 percent weed cover, 10 triploid carp per lake acres are recommended. Ponds must have an area that is 7 to 10 feet deep for the fish to overwinter.

The grass carp is sterile and will not reproduce. Pond location information (county, township and section) must be filled out on the order form as the district must apply for a permit from Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

The deadline for ordering triploid grass carp is Thursday, Sept. 9, and Friday, Sept. 20 for all other fish orders.

Fish pickup will be 7 to 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Kane-DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District office, 2315 Dean St., St. Charles.

For an order form, check the district webpage at www.kanedupageswcd.org or call the office at (630) 584-7960, ext. 3.

The Kane-DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District will be having a fall water testing program.

This program makes nitrate, metal and volatile organic chemical testing more cost effective because sample are sent simultaneously to be tested.

Tests kits are purchased during a two-week period. The water samples are taken on a designated date and returned to the district.

Samples are shipped to the lab as a group. Results are sent directly to participants and are confidential.

To obtain your kits, check the website at kanedupageswcd.org or call the office at (630) 584-7960, ext. 3.
