Molasses Creek to bring blues and folk to Bethany Art Series May 19
The Bethany Art Series wraps up its 17th season with a spring concert with Molasses Creek at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 76 W. Crystal Lake Ave., Crystal Lake.
For 24 years, this blues style group's high energy performances, heartfelt songwriting, and quirky humor have won them loyal followers all around the world.
Spend a Sunday afternoon with Molasses Creek featuring Gary Mitchell on acoustic guitar and vocals, Dave Tweedle on fiddle and vocals, Kim France on upright bass, guitar and vocals, and Gerald Hampton on mandolin, upright bass and guitar.
Molasses Creek's award-winning music and quirky humor are inspired by Ocracoke Island in North Carolina and its exotic fig trees and rich tidewater marshes. Only accessible by ferry, the island is an enchanting step out of modern times into a world of captivating natural beauty, rich maritime history, ghostly shipwrecks, heroic lifesavers, crafty pirates, and a community of 900 independently minded residents.
Molasses Creek has recorded 16 albums, reaching the No. 4 and No. 5 spots on the National Folk Radio DJ Charts. Their latest releases, "Waterbound" in 2015 and "People Get Ready" in 2016, have received acclaim from audiences across the country. The concert is hosted by the Bethany Arts Committee of the church with a freewill collection. An intermission with refreshments is included.
The Bethany Art Series began in September with a performance by Women of Note, an acclaimed classically trained trio: Terry Saurmann, soprano; Christin Rovani, soprano and violin; and Suzanne Rovani, contralto. They presented a program spanning five centuries of Western music.
On Feb. 24, the series continued with "An Afternoon with Keyboardist Eldred Marshall." The world-traveled, Dallas-based artist will perform a multifaceted recital featuring masterworks for organ and piano.
