Volunteers, supplies needed for Glenbard's 'Valentines for Vets' Feb. 6

The sweetest thing Glenbard District 87 students can do to celebrate Valentine's Day is be a part of "Valentines for Vets" on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at all Glenbard high schools.

"Valentines for Vets" is an annual event where students create cards to thank hospitalized veterans and those serving in the military.

On Feb. 6, students will gather after school in their cafeteria. Glenbard's Advocating Character Through Service (ACTS) Committee sponsors pizza, music and art supplies.

To donate art supplies, drop off donations on or before Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the main office of any Glenbard high school.

To volunteer at "Valentines for Vets," donate, or join the ACTS committee, contact the assistant principal for student services at a Glenbard high school.

This event was the brainchild of Gina Thorson, who was the public relations director in Glendale Heights.

Years ago, Thorson read a newspaper story about our veterans in hospitals or long-term care facilities rarely receiving mail. She decided to send them valentines. Her idea took on a whole new life when students at our four high schools picked up the idea and ran with it. Sadly, Thorson passed away a few years ago, but her legacy lives on in Glenbard students.
