Glenbard Parent Series to offer programs on mental health Jan. 31

The Glenbard Parent Series: (GPS) Navigating Healthy Families will host two presentations with Shimi Kang, MD, an award-winning physician, researcher, and author on human motivation, mental health, addiction, and wellness.

"The Myth of Normal: Understanding Anxiety, Depression, and Addiction" will begin at noon Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the Marquardt School District 15 Administration Center, 1860 Glen Ellyn Road in Glendale Heights.

Just as the physical symptoms of pain, weakness or dysfunction must be evaluated for root causes, so too must the mental symptoms of anxiety, depression, and addiction. Our brains are ever changing, leading to the question: what is normal and what isn't? In this fascinating talk, Kang will explain how the brain works, specifically looking at symptoms of anxiety, depression, and addiction as "signals" to produce greater change. Kang also will provide evidence-based communication and lifestyle "prescriptions" for health, happiness, and resilience.

"The Dolphin Way: Raising Happy Healthy and Self-Motivated Teens" will begin at 7 p.m. Jan. 31 at the College of DuPage McAninch Arts Center, Fawell and Park boulevards in Glen Ellyn.

Anxiety disorders, high stress, suicide, and addiction are on the rise among young people. Drawing on the latest neuroscience and behavioral research, Kang shows why some parenting styles hinder adaptability and others guide students toward lasting health and joy. Kang will provide a guide to the art and science of inspiring children to develop their own resilience and internal drive for a lifelong love of learning.
