Wheaton Christian Takes Third Place in State 3A Basketball Tourney
Wheaton Christian Grammar School (Winfield) claimed third place at the IESA State Class 8 3A Tournament after defeating Greenville JHS, 53-30 on February 18. Playing in only their second state tournament, the Spartans set IESA 3A records for the most 3-point field goals in an individual tournament game with 8 (previous record was 7) and in the overall tournament with 20 (previous record was 15).
Wheaton Christian eighth grader Luke Scheffers tallied individual records for the most 3-point field goals in an IESA 3A tournament game (6), and most in the 3A tournament with 9 (previous record 8).
The Spartans finished the season at 28-1. The boys were Suburban West Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular season champions, SWAC Tournament champions, Jay Stream Jayhawk Tournament champions, IESA Regional champions, IESA Sectional champions, as well as IESA Class 8 3A Third Place finishers. The team is coached by Wheaton Christian Head of School Steve Clum, currently celebrating 40 years of coaching. In 2015, Clum was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Now in its 74th year of operation, Wheaton Christian Grammar School is a private K-8 school located in Winfield. Current enrollment stands at 555.
